About Our Artist

caution ecological 4wd tour

Let me introduce Harry Martin.  He's a longtime member of the Ecological 4-Wheeling team.  He’s done all of the art for SHIFTING Into 4WD and most all of the art for our site.  Check out his site to see his creativity.

Originally from Huntington, West Virginia, he now calls Wyoming home.  After leaving the Navy with an Honorable discharge in 1974, he went on to California State University, Northridge and earned an electrical engineering degree.  He is currently working as a software engineer.

From humble coloring book beginnings, he honed his natural eye-hand skills on his own and eventually cut into the international magazine market.  In 1980, Hang Gliding and Home Power Magazines began publishing his work.  He now appears in similar works from Germany, Spain and Italy.

Hang gliding has been a way of life for Harry since 1975.  His Chevy Vega hatchback did double duty (paved work and dirt road fun) until his altitude requirements stripped the oil pan of its ability to contain the vital fluid.  Lucky for him, for he was at the top of the mountain, so he resourcefully coasted down the mountain to a local gas station and waited two days for a new oil pan.

With his sights still set on the high ground, he purchased a Land Cruiser (Land Crusher, as he calls it) which served him well until 1985 when he gave a 4x4 Subaru station wagon a try.  He drives that to this day and finds his Subaru is the best economical utility vehicle for the dollar.

Regarding 4-wheeling, he’s learned: 1) How to wrench his own 4X.  2) A 4x4 does not work in free fall.
3) A 4x4 stops working once the engine cylinders fill up with water.  4) You cannot safely drive a 4x4 on any road covered with mud the consistency of fine machine oil.  Maybe that’s why they call him, Scary Harry.
