PREFACE

If you’re looking for a guru, I’m not the one. I’m just the guy who compiled the skills and knowledge of innumerable others. I’d have to be pretty blind to have conducted 4WD tours and classes for 17 years and not learned something. Countless newsletter contributors helped with their specialties in medicine, firefighting and more. Still others reviewed rough drafts for errors and corrections. My thanks go out to all who knowingly and unknowingly make this handbook what it is, and my appreciation doesn’t stop with them.

Harry Martin, the artist, brought the concepts to life. He makes the handbook fun. Bill Kane, former newspaper reporter and copy editor, polished my awkward words. He makes the handbook understandable. Jenna Kane, my better half and editorial “administrative enforcer,” kept things flowing. Thank her for the index. She makes things as “proper” as possible, considering the Coyote’s stubborn ways. Past Four Wheeler magazine technical editor, Jimmy Nylund, deserves special mention, too. He has more in-depth technical knowledge than anyone I know. He makes practical some of my ridiculous claims like, “saltwater really doesn’t break anything.” This handbook is what it is because of many. However, it is dedicated to those who have yet to leave the highway. Shift into 4WD. You’ll love it!

Harry Lewellyn
