20 SAFETY, CHAPTER 2 ____________________

Remember going to Aunt Martha’s for dinner and backing out of her driveway, only to struggle to drive off forward? You found the emergency brake on, didn’t you? The typical emergency brake only works on 25 percent of the total braking surface of the 4X. And it works better in one direction than the other. Emergency brakes don’t work as well backward as forward. This is not good when pointed uphill. Be aware of the emergency brake shortcoming!

TRANSFER CASE NEUTRAL

Another detail that can lead to vehicles unexpectedly rolling away has to do with the transfer case shift lever. If you only depend on PARK or the car being in gear, you may have a surprise in store! If the transfer case accidentally gets knocked into NEUTRAL, this “hill holder” flatly fails. NEUTRAL in the transfer case is worse than NEUTRAL in the transmission because you don’t think about it as often. In fact, most of us don’t even look for this at all. Transfer case neutral makes useless park and every gear in a stick!
