 66 GETTING READY, CHAPTER 3 ____________

STAYING CLEAN

Sometimes you want to come back with that "been there," muddy macho look. On-the-other-hand, it's not much fun at day's end to have red eyes, gritty teeth and a 4WD you could grow carrots in! Follow a few simple guidelines to minimize the mess.

Dirt enters the scene three ways. One: Mother Nature - She's blowing up a storm. There is not much you can do to stop the wind or change a rainy day. This one takes tolerance or a trip home. Two: Your own vehicle kicks up dirt and debris all by its lonesome. Given a tail wind, you eat your own dirt as if you were on a Dodge City cattle drive. Typically though, the roads twist and turn enough to provide periodic relief. Three: You're not at the head of the pack so you have to eat others' muck.

FOLLOW BACK

Actually, you don't have to eat others' dust all of the time! The first suggestion, which also plays a safety role, is just common sense. Don't drive in the dust, and I understand why newcomers do. Some travelers are so afraid of getting lost they lock bumpers with the guy ahead. "No way is ol' Lost Louie going to get me," they clamor!

Lost is not a problem when you follow the simple suggestion mentioned in the Safety chapter and discussed in the next paragraph. Clean rule one: Follow back a ways.
