CHAPTER 4

In addition to proper planning and packing, it's important to understand how 4WD works. Knowing the difference between a full-time and part-time transfer case may make the difference between getting stuck or moving on. And if you learn the hard way that you have what I dub catch-22 automatic front hubs, shame on you. But fear not, the ol' Coyote has a way to overcome even this annoying trap!

In this chapter I'll offer some basics, and test your technical patience with an occasional splash of engineering detail. Throughout, however, I work very hard to convince you to always take a performance, reality check before you bust your equipment tryin' something foolish!

4WD VARIETY

There are so many bells and whistles on modern 4WDs, it's hard to find a place to start. New models and features are popping up every year. I base this chapter on what I consider a traditional 4WD. This has a 2WD/4WD, high/low range transfer case and manual hubs. But don't feel left out if yours is a little different. With very little effort, you'll be able to read between my "traditional" lines and tune right in on your particular features.
