TERRAIN AND
OBSTACLES, CHAPTER 6

The Basics chapter got you properly seated behind the wheel and offered guidance on how to prepare for the rough. This chapter deals with roads and rocks and mud and other unpaved terrain and obstacles. You'll also tackle hills and learn how to fine-tune the basics.

ROADS AND TRAILS

Roads and trials are referred to in a variety of ways. Fire trails, pole line roads, washboards, whoop-de-doos, and challenging waterfalls come to mind. In the next few paragraphs, I'll describe road conditions that pop up everywhere, but first, I offer two generalities.

FAST IS DANGEROUS

In general, the faster you can drive, figure the same is true for the other guy. Better roads may be harder on equipment than rougher ones. They lead to car-to-car smashups, not car to Mother Nature damage. Be extra careful on the easy ones. Not everyone is as skilled as you and knows to look far ahead for oncoming traffic!
