Map out the paved route and allow plenty of travel time. Safety starts before you leave home and ends when you safely return. Let the drive to the trailhead be unwind time. Arrive fresh and relaxed, not wired and up tight. Calm, relaxed travelers are safer travelers.

WATER

Carry and consume lots of drinking water. You will probably never die of starvation, but dehydration is a real killer. Most of us carry a spare lunch or two around our waistlines, but when it comes to water, there is no substitute! Bleached bones throughout the world advertise their untold final story. They went unprepared.

So you don’t need to carry water, huh?  You have an ice chest full, huh?  I learned the hard way that an upside down 4X and ice chest don’t hold water!  If you don’t carry any other spare, carry water!
