226 RECOVERY, CHAPTER 7 ______________ |
|
DIAGONAL TEETER-TOTTER In Differentials, we learned that stock, open differentials can quickly call a halt to forward progress. Remember there only has to be one tire per axle losing traction to effectively bring movement to a stop. If you're stuck, check for diagonal teeter-totter. You want to see that to ensure that you are in part-time 4WD. Diagonal teeter-totter almost always means that diagonally opposite tires spin (one on each axle). In somewhat rare situations, a tilted 4X that's going nowhere can spin both tires on the same side. This may occur on snow, ice or mud where you're stuck on a side slope. The tires on the high side will easily spin.
Confirm that one tire on each axle is spinning. If you don't see this, check further. Each recommendation that follows assumes that you have the applicable mechanical option. First, is the transfer case in part-time 4-something (4H or 4L)? Make sure that is so and not in NEUTRAL. You'll see no tires turning in NEUTRAL. |
